Pap Smear Q&A

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear, often called a Pap test, is a simple procedure used to collect a small sample of cells from your cervix (the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina). These cells are sent to a laboratory to be examined under a microscope. The goal is to find "precancerous" changes; abnormalities that aren't cancer yet but could develop into cancer if left alone.

At Ogeechee OBGYN, we often perform an HPV test alongside your Pap smear, which checks for the human papillomavirus, the primary cause of most cervical cell changes.

Why is screening so important?

Cervical cancer is unique because it is almost entirely preventable through regular screening. Because cell changes happen slowly over several years, routine Pap smears allow our team to catch and treat issues long before they become a serious threat. Most women who develop cervical cancer have either never had a Pap smear or haven't had one in many years. By staying current with your screenings, you are taking the single most important step in preventing this disease.

When should I get a Pap smear?

Screening guidelines have evolved to ensure women get the right care at the right time. While every patient’s history is unique, general recommendations include:

  • Ages 21–29: A Pap smear every three years.
  • Ages 30–65: A Pap smear every three years, an HPV test alone every five years, or "co-testing" (both tests) every five years.
  • Over age 65: You may be able to stop screening if you have a history of normal results.

Our providers will review your personal health history to determine the exact schedule that is safest for you.

What should I expect during the procedure?

We understand that pelvic exams can feel a bit intimidating, but the Pap smear itself is very quick—usually taking less than a minute. You will lie on the exam table, and your provider will use a speculum to gently view the cervix. A small, soft brush or spatula is used to lightly sweep a few cells from the surface.

You may feel a brief sensation of pressure or a slight pinch, but it shouldn't be painful. For added comfort, Pro-Nox (a patient-controlled nitrous oxide option) may be available to help you relax during the procedure. Afterward, you might experience very light spotting for a day, which is completely normal. Once the results are in, we will discuss them with you. If a result is "abnormal," don't panic; it usually just means we need to take a closer look with a follow-up exam.
