What is Pro-Nox?

Pro-Nox is an inhaled, patient controlled pain management system that uses a 50/50 mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. With Pro-Nox, you can be in control of your comfort level by inhaling the gas as needed throughout your procedure.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a safe and commonly used sedative gas. This is not general anesthesia; you will be fully awake, aware, and in control of your comfort.

Why are we offering it?

We understand that some procedures can cause anxiety or discomfort. Nitrous oxide can help you:

• Feel more relaxed and calm
• Reduce mild to moderate pain
• Stay comfortable and less tense during your procedure

Is it safe?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation used in outpatient medicine. You will be monitored throughout your procedure, and you will be able to stop using the gas at any time if you feel uncomfortable.

What kind of procedures can I use Pro-Nox for?

• Pap Smears
• IUD Insertion or Removal
• Nexplanon Insertion or Removal
• Colposcopy
• LEEP
• Endometrial Biopsy
• Elevate procedures

How does it work?

• You will hold a tube to your mouth to deliver the gas.
• You may continue to take breaths through the tube as needed.
• Once the procedure is over, we stop the gas and let you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear it from your system.

What to expect during use:

• Nitrous oxide works quickly, usually within 2–3 minutes.
• You’ll feel relaxed, light-headed, warm, or even a little giddy.
• You may feel tingling in your fingers or toes, or a floating sensation.
• You stay awake and can respond to questions or directions.

What are the potential side effects?

• Nausea* and/or vomiting
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Headache after prolonged use (rare)

*Taking a few deep breaths without the mouthpiece should alleviate this feeling

Can I drive myself home after my procedure?

Yes. The effect of nitrous oxide wear off quickly and you should be able to safely drive yourself home around 10-15 minutes after your appointment.

Does insurance pay for Pro-Nox?

Insurance generally does not cover the cost of nitrous oxide, but we feel it is an important option for pain relief to offer to our patients. Each nitrous oxide treatment costs $125.

What do I do if I want to use Pro-Nox for my procedure?
