What is Maternal Fetal Medicine?

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) providers, also known as perinatologists, specialize in high-risk pregnancy care. If you have a pregnancy related complication, you may be referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine for further evaluation. Your OB works closely with the high-risk specialist to determine the best plan of care to keep you and your baby safe and healthy throughout your pregnancy and delivery.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

High-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy where the mother or the fetus have an increased risk of adverse outcomes compared to uncomplicated pregnancies.

What happens when I’m referred to MFM at The Annex?

  • Your records will be reviewed by Women’s Telehealth staff
  • Women’s Telehealth staff will call you to schedule your new patient appointment
  • You will receive a text/email with new patient paperwork to complete

Do I still see my regular OB provider if I am seeing Maternal Fetal Medicine?

Yes, you still have routine prenatal care appointments with your OB provider. Maternal Fetal Medicine providers works closely with your OB provider to determine the best plan of care to keep you and your baby safe and healthy throughout your pregnancy and delivery.

What happens at my appointment?

  • Ultrasound

You will start by getting your vitals checked and then have a comprehensive ultrasound

  • Image Transfer

The sonographer will send a report and all images to the high-risk telehealth provider

  • Provider Review

The providers will review all images, lab results, and additional medical records

  • Telehealth Consultation

The nurse will initiate your telehealth appointment so you can speak with the provider

  • Additional Orders

Depending on results, you may have lab work done or be referred to additional specialists

MFM

Diabetic Education

Meet with our diabetic educator, from the comfort of your own home, to discuss medical and nutritional information so you can have the skills, tools, and knowledge you need to successfully manage your diabetes.
 
MFM Providers will review blood sugar logs weekly to add or adjust medications during your pregnancy.

Genetic Counseling

Our high-risk doctors will review your family history, explain available testing options, and provide unbiased patient education so you can make the best decision for you and your baby regarding testing options during your pregnancy.

Appointment Reminders & Tips

  • Eat a snack and have a cold drink before your appointment to help increase your baby’s movement during your ultrasound.
  • Bring your blood sugar or blood pressure logs to all visits to help providers manage your medications.
  • Write down questions before your appointment so you don’t forget!
  • We are committed to providing a caring, comfortable, and private environment for our patients. We allow one visitor per patient. With the sensitive information and exams provided, we do not allow visitors younger than 18 years old in the ultrasound or telehealth visit.
